On the southwest corner of the Carmelitos Public Housing Community campus, a Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) public housing site, lies a little piece of heaven called The Growing Experience. This urban farm and community garden provides access to locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables to a community that has been traditionally under-served. The Growing Experience urban farm also provides education and enrichment opportunities to the community, offers a safe green space for recreation, and promotes community building while serving as a model for sustainability.
Maria Brief, Marketing Manager at OPC, saw first-hand how this little piece of land in the Carmelitos Public Housing Community can provide so much nourishment for the community, both nutritionally and holistically. She attended the 10th Annual Farm to Table Dinner fundraiser last month, hosted by The Growing Experience in partnership with Primal Alchemy Catering. The guests enjoyed the creations of top chefs from the Long Beach area who volunteered their time and expertise to prepare dishes using the fruits and vegetables that were grown on site, highlighting the importance of urban farming and sustainable, locally-sourced produce.
The proceeds from the fundraiser goes directly to support the expansion of The Growing Experience’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, farm stand, and community programs.
“I hope to continue supporting the Carmelitos Public Housing Community, the LACDA, and the Growing Experience urban farm by attending future fundraisers,” Maria shared. “It’s an excellent opportunity to increase awareness of the efforts to help the community of low income families through gourmet, healthy foods.”
