OPC worked with Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) on the Barren Ridge Renewable Transmission Project (BRRTP). The BRRTP was designed to access renewable resources in the Tehachapi Mountain and Mojave Desert areas which spans a distance of approximately 75 miles from the Mojave Desert south to the San Fernando Valley. LADWP is constructing a new 230kV double circuit transmission line that will add capacity through two wind projects in the mountains northeast of Tehachapi. OPC was assigned 164 parcels with a compressed schedule for acquisition.
For the Beacon Solar Energy Project, OPC was tasked to acquire mineral rights associated with DWP ownership of approximately 3200 acres. Clear title and surface access is critical for the construction financing for this important alternative energy project. Due to the large acreage required for the project, potential impacts and mitigation for biological resources are major issues. The project is located in eastern Kern County at the western edge of the Mojave Desert. The Beacon power block and solar arrays will occupy approximately 1,240 acres, with a rerouted drainage channel, evaporation ponds, roadways, administration buildings, and other support facilities occupying the remainder of the 2,012-acre plant site. The capital cost for the project is approximately $1 billion.
